Huang Tyan-yu is Lindo’s first husband by arranged marriage. He is spoiled and doted on by his parents, never forced to take responsibility for anything as he grows up. When Lindo initially moves in with the Huang family, Tyan-yu is rude to her, furthering her misery. However, once it becomes clear that Tyan-yu has been as afraid of marrying Lindo as she is of marrying him, we are able to read him in a more sympathetic light. While some of his initial rudeness is surely childishness, he may also be expressing his discomfort with the marriage in the only way he knows how. Nevertheless, his selfishness comes through even here. In order to explain why he hasn’t gotten Lindo pregnant, Tyan-yu tells his mother that Lindo has refused him. In contrast, when Lindo plans her escape from the marriage, she concocts a scheme that will allow Tyan-yu to save face and keep him from getting in trouble with his mother or society. Despite his lack of malice, Tyan-yu still demonstrates thoughtlessness, whereas Lindo must consider everyone’s feelings in order to escape her fate.
