Overview

Examining how a skilled writer utilizes varying sentence lengths shows students how sentence structure enhances meaning and adds power to writing. Students will use this worksheet to closely examine the sentence structure of the text found on two pages of the chapter/story “On the Rainy River.” Students will type out the text, an exercise designed to help them become more aware of O’Brien’s choices and craft. After typing, they will underline long sentences and highlight short sentences. Then small groups will discuss the effect of these varied sentence lengths. Finally, students will write a half-page reflection, making intentional use of varied sentence lengths to highlight their points. Pass out this worksheet after students have read the chapter/story “On the Rainy River.”
