Overview

The military lingo used throughout The Things They Carried adds to the flavor of the novel and contributes to the sense of its veracity. Students will use this worksheet to practice figuring out meaning of unknown words from context and then expand their knowledge by looking up definitions of specific military terms. They will then reflect on what purpose lingo serves in general, why so much military lingo is used in the novel—especially given that many readers will not be familiar with it—and what kinds of lingo they use in their own lives.
