Overview
The way an author constructs a story helps convey its meaning. Studying story construction gives students an overall greater appreciation of the craft of writing and also illuminates much about an individual text. Students will use this worksheet to look closely at the impact of O’Brien’s choices regarding the structure of the chapter/story titled “The Man I Killed.” Pass out the worksheet after students have read “The Man I Killed.” After students have completed the worksheet, have them discuss their observations in small groups or as a class.
