Overview

Understanding how the parts contribute to the whole in a novel made up of a series of connected stories will enhance student understanding of the entire text. Students will use this worksheet to trace different themes in The Things They Carried and consider the impact of O’Brien’s choices in each story on the work as a whole. Pass out this worksheet when students start reading the novel so they can fill in the chart as they read each story.
