Overview

A close study of character is key to effective analysis of literature. The stories and details in The Things They Carried not only help to reveal the characters in the novel but also help to convey the greater experience of the Vietnam War. Students will use this worksheet to look closely at the details and stories connected to a character of their choice to better understand this character and how he or she helps tell the greater story of the Vietnam War. Use this worksheet after students have finished reading the novel. Consider putting students in small groups to complete the task and assigning each group a different character. Then have groups present their information to the class.
