Overview
Paying attention to references authors make to other works of literature and to history can help students understand a text more deeply. Students will use this worksheet to track the references Shakespeare makes to mythology, philosophy, other works of literature, religion, and poetry. Pass out the worksheet before students begin to read The Taming of the Shrew. Encourage students to think about how these references can act as touchstones for them to better understand the play. Have each student choose two of their references to research further after completing the play. Consider having them write paragraphs about each reference and then compile these paragraphs so that all students have a thorough explanation of references found throughout the play.
