Overview

Literary allusions add power and layers of meaning to any work. Students will use this worksheet to explore how Mark Twain uses literary allusions to create humor in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Students will find each allusion in the text using the chapter number as a clue, read the quote in context, identify the literary allusion, and make notes to explain why the allusion adds humor to the story. Prompt students to use the worksheets to either discuss or write about their ideas. Assign the worksheet after students have finished reading the novel. Students can work with this material individually or in small groups.
