Overview

Authors reveal a story’s themes in various ways, including through the words spoken by the characters. Students will use this worksheet to explore how Mark Twain expresses the themes of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn through direct quotations. Students will find quotes in the text using chapter numbers as clues, read the quotes in context, identify the theme(s) the quotes express, and explain the meanings of the quotes in context. Assign the worksheet after students have finished reading the novel. Students can work with this material individually or in small groups.
