Foxface is the girl from District 5. Though we never learn her true name, Katniss nicknames her "Foxface" because she is sly, clever, wily, and fox-like. Foxface's forte is intellect, not brute strength. She's not a killer and her strategy is "to evade, not attack." She operates alone, takes controlled, measured actions, and never acts impulsively. She is "smarter than the Careers" and cleverly detects the booby trap that the Careers set up to protect their supplies. She steps carefully to avoid the mines, steals enough resources to sustain her but not too much to arouse suspicion, and then expertly traces her steps back to safety. Later, as opposed to Katniss and the other tributes who hide in the areas surrounding the Cornucopia, Foxface cleverly obscures herself within the structure overnight after the Gamemakers announce that crucial resources will be delivered there at dawn. She has obtained the supplies and returned to the safety of the woods before the other tributes have even reached the Cornucopia. Katniss admires and envies Foxface's plan, forcing her to reflect that while she is “always dreading the others…maybe Foxface is the real opponent here.”

Foxface dies somewhat anonymously. Katniss barely knows her, and she dies before we gain any further insight. Her death is wholly unceremonious, emphasizing the depravity of the Hunger Games. In a crucial example of foreshadowing, Foxface dies eating poisonous nightlock berries. These berries later become an important symbol of resistance against the Capitol and the Hunger Games. When the Gamemakers announce that plans have changed and only one tribute can be crowned victor, Katniss and Peeta refuse to give in to the Gamemakers’ deceit and decide to eat the nightlock berries to kill themselves together rather than play by their rules. Because the Gamemakers give in and allow Katniss and Peeta to both go home, the berries become associated with two children from District 12 who undermined the Capitol.
