Overview

Settings are chosen carefully by authors, and students must be able to interpret them accurately to fully appreciate a piece of literature. The settings of The Merchant of Venice—Venice and Belmont—represent two completely different worlds. Students will use this worksheet to summarize passages that provide a better understanding of each locale and then write a paragraph explaining why Shakespeare juxtaposes these locations and their impact on the play and the audience. Pass out the worksheet after students have finished reading the play.
