Overview

Authors often use words with specific connotations to convey a certain theme or mood. In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury frequently uses words related to fire, light, and darkness to create an ominous world and to compare and contrast nature, literature, and technology. Students will use this worksheet to group the words Bradbury uses that are related to fire, light, and darkness into categories based on the themes of destruction, ignorance, and knowledge. Remind students to think about the connotation of each word and not just its literal meaning.
