Overview

When we summarize a chapter or passage in a text, we examine all of the details, determine which are most important, and then synthesize those details into a single statement that reveals the heart or essence of the passage. Refining this skill helps students become better readers and enhances their appreciation of literature. Students will use this worksheet to summarize the final chapter of Animal Farm, in which numerous changes have taken place on the farm. Students will identify and summarize key scenes to help them determine the deeper, implied meaning in the passage. Students will use all the information they gather to make predictions about whether the animals will ever rebel against Napoleon’s rule. Pass out this worksheet after students finish reading the novel.
