Ralph Ellison himself did not believe that a film adaptation of his novel would come out well, and he rejected numerous offers, including an offer from the legendary music producer Quincy Jones. He even stipulated in his will that no dramatic adaptations of any kind would be permitted for as long as his wife survived him. Ellison died in 1994, and his wife died in 2005. To date, however, no cinematic adaptations of Ellison’s novel exist.
