In this chapter, an interesting juxtaposition occurs. When the boys raid Ralph and Piggy’s camp, they ignore the conch—long thought to be representative of order on the island—and instead opt to steal Piggy’s glasses. The glasses are symbolic of knowledge insofar as they are able to create fire (ostensibly to achieve rescue), but in Jack’s hands they are merely used as a tool to consolidate his power.
