Who are the protagonists and the antagonists in Romeo and Juliet?
Romeo and Juliet are jointly the protagonists of the play. They share a desire to be with each other and in that goal, they are opposed by their families. The Montagues and the Capulets will fight each other about almost anything, but they do agree that there should be no intermingling between members of their clans. This makes the families the play’s antagonists, although it can also be argued that it is specifically the hot-headed young men of the two families who better fit the antagonist or villian designation.
