Sir Paris, I will make a desperate tender
Of my child’s love. I think she will be ruled
In all respects by me. Nay, more, I doubt it not.—
Wife, go you to her ere you go to bed.
Acquaint her here of my son Paris' love,
And bid her, mark you me, on Wednesday next—
But, soft! What day is this?
Act 3, Scene 4 is a conversation between Capulet, Paris, and Lady Capulet. This quote by Capulet shows how little agency thirteen-year-old Juliet has in important life decisions. Her father—who earlier in the play had told Paris that he would have to wait two years to marry Juliet—has decided (perhaps for political reasons, which you can read more about in our Analysis) to move up the wedding, so it will now occur in just a few days.
