Sekani is Starr’s eight-year-old brother, one of the only remaining examples of innocence in her world and in Garden Heights. Because their parents have opted to send them to school at Williamson Prep, and due to his age and lack of proximity to the neighborhood, Sekani remains largely unaware of the nuances and racial tensions pervading the Heights. He is a constant source of joy and comic relief to both Starr and Seven, a much-needed reprieve from the terrors and tensions they encounter every day. Because of the trauma they watched Starr endure at far too young of an age, Maverick and Lisa have taken certain measures to ensure the safety of Sekani, as he is the youngest and most vulnerable. While they waited until Starr and Seven were 12 years old to have “the talk” about how to live safely as a Black person, Starr overhears her father sitting down with Sekani, even though he is a few years younger. This escalation emphasizes the terrifying realities that Black children face, forcing them to grow up before they need to.
