What happens in Act 2, Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet?
Romeo looks for Juliet, then overhears Mercutio and Benvolio talking about him as he hides from them after the ball.
What is the context for Mercutio’s jokes at Romeo’s expense in Act 2, Scene 1?
As discussed regarding Act 1, Scene 4, Romeo and Mercutio have a friendship that allows Mercutio to make fun of Romeo for what Mercutio sees as his romanticized view of the world. We can see this in Act 2, Scene 1, as Mercutio has two quotes directed at his friend (explained in the link below) that Shakespeare’s original audience would have understood. The first ridicules Romeo’s use (at least before he met Juliet) of clichéd love language. The second is a crude sexual pun.
