What does the title of The Great Gatsby mean?
The title, The Great Gatsby, is a reflection of narrator Nick Carraway’s admiration for the novel’s protagonist. But the title is also ironic since we learned in Chapter 5 that Gatsby’s “greatness” is questionable given his criminal activities. Moreover, as we learn in Chapter 6, he isn’t “Gatsby” either since it is a name that James Gatz made up to make himself sound more sophisticated.
