O’Brien says this to the captive Winston just before Winston is taken to the terrifying Room 101 to be tortured in Book Three, Chapter 4. Like many of O’Brien’s comments to Winston throughout his interrogation of him in Book Three, he is conveying to the Party does not engage in any half-measures in its crushing of dissent among those who rebel against it; the total capitulation to the Party in deeds, words, and—most of all—thoughts, is the only outcome that is acceptable.
