Why is Lydia running off with Wickham such a disaster?

The prospect of Lydia eloping with Wickham is troubling (and scandalous) enough already, but when it becomes clear he has no plans to actually marry her, the situation becomes dire. Living and having sex with a man outside of marriage would effectively destroy Lydia’s reputation, leaving her unable to marry anyone else. She and her family would be shunned from society, meaning the villainous Wickham marrying Lydia, previously considered unfavorable, has become the family’s only chance.
